Services for collecting information during emergencies

Service composition with information provided by different providers has been studied at length in the literature. Providing services and service compositions to support Citizen Science and Emergency Management Systems in critical or problematic situations presents many challenging issues, in particular in dynamically composing services and in evaluating the quality of the resulting information. The approaches to compose services that involve user interaction developed in two European H2020 projects will be discussed: E2mC (Evolution of Emergency Copernicus services), which developed an approach to information extraction from social media, based on services for geographic information management, AI, and crowdsourcing in the context of emergency situations after natural disasters, and CROWD4SDG (Citizen Science for Monitoring Climate Impacts and Achieving Climate Resilience, starting in May 2020) to support data collection for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) using Citizen Science, where the provisioning of compositions of IT tools and services is one of the goals of the project.

Barbara Pernici is professor in Computer Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano since 1993. Her research interests include adaptive information systems design, data and information quality, IS energy efficiency, and extracting located images from social media. She has published more than 60 papers in international journals and about 350 papers at international level. She has lead the information systems group of Politecnico di Milano in many projects, among which the European H2020 Project Crowd4SDG (Citizen Science for Monitoring Climate Impacts and Achieving Climate Resilience, starting in May 2020), FP7 projects on energy efficiency ECO2Clouds and GAMES (Green Active Management of Energy in Service Centers, where she was scientific leader). Recently, she participated in the EU H2020 projects E2MC (E2MC Evolution of Emergency Copernicus services), DataBench (Evidence Based Big Data Benchmarking to Improve Business Performance), and DITAS (Data-intensive applications Improvement by moving daTA and computation in mixed cloud/fog environmentS). She was an elected chair of TC8 Information Systems of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), of IFIP WG on Information Systems Design, vice-chair of the IFIP WG on Services-Oriented Systems, and chair of the Steering Committee of the international Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE). She has chaired or cochaired main conferences, as general chair or program chair, including CAiSE, ER, BPM, ICSOC, Coopis, tracks in ICSE and ICIS.

The new challenge in AI, the ML Ops - How to leverage technologies & architecture patterns

ML OPS (Machine Learning Operation) is a practice for collaboration and communication between data scientists and operations professionals to help manage production ML (or deep learning) lifecycle. This practice is becoming one of the most significant challenges for deploying ML models in production. ML OPS requires a deep understanding of the Machine Learning and AI concepts and practices, but also a deep understanding of the state of the art data engineering & architecture. In this talk, we are going to discuss the ML OPS challenges and we are going to explore how new technologies and architecture patterns can tackle them. Especially, how the combination of object store, stateful stream processing and serverless computing can create value in ML OPS.

Sabri Skhiri is the R&D director of EURA NOVA and the Chief Visionary Officer for digazu. With extensive expertise in computer science domains ranging from high scalability, cloud & elasticity, to data management, search & indexing, Sabri has a proven track record in directing and managing teams on one-step-ahead projects in which time to market and project innovation were key factors in market differentiation and business success (pharma, banking, telecom, insurance, finance, logistics, media). Sabri started his career in research in bioinformatics, and then he switched to R&D in telecom where he quickly became research program manager at Alcatel-lucent for highly distributed network software platforms. In 2008, he co-founded EURANOVA a research company monetizing knowledge and research to create competitive advantages. As a first mission, Sabri started leading the R&D architecture department for Huawei technologies in EU within the European Research Center. He was keeping that strategic position for more than 7 years.

Title: Analysis of WiFi probes to understand people mobility

Understanding people mobility in urban areas is of key importance for the implementation of major city management tasks, such as: planning public transport services; overseeing security during big city events; and analysing the influence of public areas on city quality of life. This talk presents how the analysis of WiFi probes requests generated by mobile devices can contribute to build this understanding while preserving users privacy. Key mobility indicators can be extracted: crowd density per area of interest, people flows, recurrent mobility patterns, and mobility heat maps. These indicators are provided by the PmA solution developed by the MCLab, which has been adopted by Italian municipalities to monitor citizens mobility habits.

Luigi Atzori (PhD, 2000) is professor of Telecommunications at the University of Cagliari, where he leads the activities of the MCLab laboratory (Multimedia & Communications) with around 20 affiliated researchers. Since 2018, he has been the coordinator of the master degree course in Internet Technology Engineering at the University of Cagliari. His research interests fall in the area of Internet of Things (IoT), with particular reference to the design of effective algorithms for the realization of social networks among connected devices to create the Social IoT paradigm. His interests also falls in the area of Quality of Experience (QoE), with particular application to the management of services and resources in new generation networks for multimedia communications. Lately, he also applies the study of QoE to IoT services. He is the founding partner of the GreenShare spinoff where he currently serves as CIO; the company provides IoT services in the sustainable mobility sector. He is a regular reviewer for the EU and for Irish, Spanish and Swedish research programs. He has been the coordinator of European projects in the areas of QoE and IoT (QoE-Net, Demanes and Netergit). He serves regularly in the conference organizing committee of the sector and as associate and guest editor of several international journals (IEEE IoT journal, Ad Hoc Networks, IEEE IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, IEEE Communications Magazine, etc.).
